Slaters primary focus is on the support of entrepreneurs who have the vision, leadership and commitment to build substantial technology-based business enterprises based in the state.
Our investment strategy focuses primarily on industry sectors best-suited to developing an innovation-based economy, including
- Life Sciences
- Software, Internet and Media
- Energy and Environmental Technology
Slater typically invests at the inception stage in the development of a new venture, often based upon ideas and technologies originating in academic institutions, government research laboratories or commercial enterprises located within the region.
In most cases, investments are premised upon the possibility of raising substantial follow-on financing from venture capital investors, grants, or other strategic partners, to accelerate the creation of a significant number of high-value, high-wage jobs in the long-term effort to help build and sustain the burgeoning knowledge economy in Rhode Island.
Slater at Work
Slater provides up to $3 million annually in seed funding for local technology-based ventures in the above categories. This seed funding combined with the deep industry knowledge and the constantly expanding ecosystem of strategic partnerships that Slater provides often serves as the critical catalyst that enables a company to successfully make the transition from the lab to the investment stage and/or product sales.
Several core tenets form the basis for Slaters mission and strategy, including:
- a commitment to entrepreneurship as a strategy of choice for economic development;
- investing limited amounts of risk capital can have significant catalytic effect;
- the belief that big ideas most often start small; and
- the principle that commitment of key people is the foundation on which all else is built
Slater also maintains an entrepreneur-in-residence program for technologists at the earliest stage of venture development, as well as the growing Entrepreneurial Fellows Program designed to introduce Rhode Island university students to entrepreneurship in the biotech and life sciences industries in Rhode Island.
